Bangladesh is situated in the southern part of Asia, on the shore of the Bay of Bengal. The Bay of Bengal is on the south and the other three sides of the country is surrounded by India but she shares a bit of South-East border with Myanmar. The Tropic of Cancer and the 90° longitudinal line intersect almost in the middle of the country. She has been independent from Pakistan in 1971. The total land area of the country is 1,47,570 square kilometers and population is about 190 millions. Almost all of the people of country speak Bangla. English is also used widely as well. There are number of tribal dialects. About 85 percent of the populations are Muslims and the rest are Hindus, Buddhists and Christians. The national dress for men is payjama and panjabi and sari for women. But educated people are wearing trouser and shirts and young women sallower and kamiz.
The farmers, the majority of the population, wear lungi and panjabi. The country is generally male-dominated and men manage the finances and maintain the family. But the female rights are acknowledged and they are encouraged in every sector to the country. Dhaka is the capital of the country and Chittagong, the port city, is called the commercial capital of Bangladesh. Cox’s Bazaar, the longest sea beach in the world, for its silvery sandy sea-beach and Rangamati with evergreen hills and lakes are special natural sites worth seeing for the tourists.
